MJ Anderson (aka Mary), Owner and Damn Mary Overlord – MJ was born in Missouri but spent most of her childhood in the Phillippines. The brewery name comes from her alter ego, “that damn Mary,” who behaves from time to time in ways MJ NEVER would. A former Regional Executive for the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA, MJ’s passion for beer is equal to her passion for life.

“Choosing my favoirte beer is like choosing a favorite child,” she says. “It just depends on what I’m doing…or, well, EATING. Hot day eating crabs? Arm Candy or Gose Trippin‘ to the rescue! Steak on the grill at home night? Proud Mary till the last man is standing. Spicy enchiladas? Funked Cluster, ice cold. Fresh seared burger with extra lettuce and tomatoes? Tried and True, at least two. Sashimi bowl with fresh ginger and wasabi? Grab your chop sticks and an Easy Money! If I find myself at the end of a meal and a big piece of carrot cake with cream cheese icing is waiting for my attention? Skip it. Oh Mama! Milk Stout to close my day.

Aside from being a brewmaster, MJ’s a singer/songwriter, seeker of wisdom, outdoors freak, and lover of all things that make people Mary.

Christian Johnson, Resident Artiste – Christian was born in Memphis, but has spent all of his life in Virginia and considers it to be his home state. A recent graduate of VCUArts, Christian is pursuing a career in the fields of illustration and graphic design, and hopes to someday become a concept artist for game companies and movie studios. When not tending beer, he is usually reading, drawing, or cooking, and generally living life. Christian enjoys chamber music and ten-pin bowling (almost as much as he enjoys Oh Mama! Milk Stout).

Susan Johnson, Sales Ninja – As former Director of Development for the Northern Neck YMCA and the owner of InsideOut Yoga, Susan knows how to execute on tasks. She grew up in NJ but has lived in the south since 1987 and Irvington since 1997 where she and her husband, Burke, raised their three children, including Christian (see above). When she’s not teaching yoga or getting sh*t done at TDM, you can find her doing yoga, cooking, reading, hiking and hanging out with family and friends. Oh, and she LOVES IPA’s, especially Funked Cluster and Proud Mary.

Marnie Leichty, Mary Shutterbug & Sales Ninja – Marnie was born in Indiana, but spent most of her life in Newport News. She loves horses, reading, photography, traveling, good beer (Proud Mary is her favorite), and fine dining…not always in that order. She’s been a surgical technologist for 21 years, and a traveling one for the last 6-½of those years. During that time, she’s worked at 12 hospitals in nine different states, driven solo from Carrollton, VA to Seattle, WA, and has been blessed with so many new and exciting experiences and new friendships. Her family is VERY important to her and she loves them dearly!!

Lisa Shivers – Sales Ninja – Lisa’s two biggest passions are people and travel.  As the oldest of four children from Mason City, Iowa she spent her first 12 years as an Army Brat living in Germany for five years and in five different states – hence the beginning of her travel passion.  Her two stipulations when she agreed to move to the Northern Neck in 1994, were to use her passport every year and to ski at least once a year.  Lisa is married to Gregg & mother to three adult children. Normally a wine drinker, Lisa loves Oh Mama! Milk Stout and recommends it to other wine drinkers. When not on the road or pouring beer, you can find her pounding the pavement in Williamsburg and the Northern Neck selling advertising for The Local Scoop magazine.

Mela Witthaus, Chief Mary Maker – A “responsible free spirit,” Mela’s diverse career path– including caterer, massage therapist, and occupational certified hand therapist–has brought her to her current position as Chief Mary Maker at That Damn Mary. She’s a native of Virginia, currently resides in Mathews County, and enjoys hiking, yoga, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and of course GREAT CRAFT BEER. Her current favorite is Funked Cluster followed by a tie – Tried and True Pale Ale and Proud Mary. She invites you to come and see what the buzz is all about!
